Workshops & Classes

At Blue Ox we believe that the most powerful learning experience is to learn about a trade while simultaneously learning the science and history of that trade. True understanding happens through discussions that show the interconnectedness of all things. We believe that the job of the instructor is to make the quest for information intriguing enough to inspire in the students with drive to explore and find their own answers. This is how mankind moves forward.

How it Works

We have three different pricing tiers - the community program youth rate, regular youth rate, and an adult rate. In order to keep our youth community rate affordable and pay our instructors a living wage, you will see a higher price point for the other two tiers. Read below to find out more about each pricing tier.

Pricing

  • Offered only to local community school students or community program partners aged 12-18

We offer discounted rates for students aged 12-18 who come to us through local community schools and programs, which is paid by the school or community program. We only offer full sessions of these classes (4 classes 2 hours each, 8 hours total). We no longer offer “drop-in” workshops at this rate. To qualify for these rates the student must be between the ages of 12 and 18 and attend a local community school, Humboldt County approved school program, or community program (such as 4H). Class size minimum is 2 students and the maximum is 4 students. Classes will not be scheduled unless the class minimum is met. Group classes can only be accommodated if the students come from the same school or program. For example, we do not put 4H members in the same class as students that come to us through a community charter school.

Classes cost $160 per person (to be paid by the school) for 8 hours total of instruction and include all materials. Please speak with your child’s school to see if the institution has designated funds for extracurricular learning.

Schools & Programs we have worked with in the past:

    Alder Grove Charter School

    Zoe Barnum High School

    Northern United Charter School

    Pacific View Charter School

    Coastal Grove Charter School

    Fortuna Middle School

    Eureka High School

    Freshwater 4H

    Ferndale 4H

    Miranda 4H

  • Offered to general public youth aged 12-18

If you want to skip past the class minimum or are not enrolled in a community partnered school, but are still in the age range of 12-18, we offer a public youth rate. We offer classes (8 hours total) and workshops (2 hours total) at this rate and they do not require a class size minimum. These classes and workshops are at a slightly higher price point (which is paid by the parent or guardian), but as mentioned above you have the ability to schedule a one on one class. Sticking with our mission statement, we want to be able to offer the younger generation a chance to learn these critical thinking and trade skills. While there is no price break at this tier for purchasing more than one workshop, we can offer the Tier 1 rate if there are more than two students**.

Two hour one-on-one workshops start at $90 per person and one-on-one classes (8 hours total of instruction) start at $360 per person (to be paid by parent or guardian) and include all materials

** students must be from same household **

  • Offered to adults over the age of 18

We offer single workshops which are two hours long and typically cover the basics of the craft and the completion of a small project, as well as classes which are four two hour long classes (8 total hours of instruction) and take a deeper dive into each trade. There is no class size minimum, but each workshop and class have a maximum capacity of 4 people.

One workshop starts at $120 per person and classes start at $485 per person. Prices vary per tradecraft and include all materials.
